Chapter 10

In the kitchen, the fruit loaf had already disappeared behind one of the four dampers. Liz felt like being in a fairytale. She had always wanted to cook at a British stove. This had been one of the reasons for her ideas of serving a German Christmas dinner in an English manor. When Nigel had told her about the traditional oven, Liz had been over the moon despite the summer heat in Bali. For a moment, she thought about what that said about her, rather being in the kitchen than having her food served as though she were a princess. She didn’t care, grinned, and got back to work.

Meanwhile, the kids had started rolling out the dough to cut out some cookies in the shapes of hearts, stars, and Christmas trees. After discussing who would get to do what and when, the two siblings were working together in peace at the kitchen table. Mrs. Cuthbert was preparing the Mince Pies.

The first cookies were ready and were cooling down on different sheets. Mrs. Cuthbert had saved them from being devoured by the kids right away and had placed them on one of the taller countertops. There should still be some cookies left for tea. In the kitchen, it smelled heavenly of cinnamon and vanilla, butter, and sugar. Liz grinned happily. It was exactly the way she had imagined it to be.

To the joy of the children, she had tried to teach them the German Christmas song In der Weihnachtsbäckerei. They were having problems with the lyrics, but the melody was so much easier to remember, so they were humming it away. Even Mrs. Cuthbert couldn’t help but listen. Liz was sure they’d still be humming until bedtime. It wouldn’t be the first time for someone not to be able to get the song out of their head. Liz’s smile grew even wider. Henry saw it and grinned – covered in flour – back at her. He looked so cute that Liz was about to kiss him from top to bottom. Instead, she reached for the camera and took a few pictures from different angles. At the same time, she checked if the cookies had cooled down so they could decorate them.

“Liz?” Henry asked and walked over to her.

“Yes, sweetie?” Liz leaned down to him.

“Are the biscuits ready?”

She lifted him up and set him down on the countertop. “You mean if they are ready to have you decorate them?”

“Yes!” He nodded eagerly and Liz joined in. “Yes, we can start preparing the icing sugar now.”

“May I? May I?” Claire came running, as sprinkled with dough and flour as her brother.

Before there was another fight, Liz said right away: “Both of you can help.”

Whoops sounded through the kitchen.

Liz and Mrs. Cuthbert had already prepared everything so all the kids had to do was stir and pour it over the cookies. Liz reached to the left to get the cups. When she turned back, the siblings were glowing, their cheek pouches full. The two looked like a mixture of a hamster and the cookie monster from Sesame Street.
